Top 10 Extravagant Marriage Proposals

Some men just make it more difficult for the average guy. They propose in such a unique and extravagant way that the average, drunken “let's get married” just won't cut it anymore. Let's look at those marriage proposals that stand at the top in terms of their extravagance and creativeness. I am a fan of the clever ones, but in the modern world clever doesn't go viral. Decide which ones you like best for yourself.

1. Tattooed Wrists

The couple had already decided to marry, but Robinson hadn't proposed yet and came up with the idea to tattoo the words “Will you marry me?” on the insides of his wrists. His fiancée to be, Bate, was watching TV and he circled his arms around her to reveal the message on his wrists. Luckily she agreed and he didn't have to spend five years wearing wristbands until he could pull the same stunt on another girl.

2. Floating on Air

Graciela Asturias was literally left floating on air when her now fiancé proposed to her. As a birthday celebration they were on a flight that simulates weightlessness while diving from 35,000 feet. However, she was in for a surprise as during one of the descents her partner, Alex, managed to ensure the ring didn't float away and proposed to Graciela. It was a proposal to take your breath away.

3. You Make Me Hot

Half cheesy, half insane is my view on the next one. A guy called Todd set up a stunt where he jumped on fire into a swimming pool before surfacing in front of his now wife, and bending on one knee to propose. The cheesiness came as he uttered the lines, “Malissa, you make me hot. I just want to show that my heart is on fire for you. Will you marry me?” Malissa replied that even though you are completely insane, I will marry you!

4. Hey, You are on TV

Buying ad space in the middle of the Super Bowl is pretty pricey. Rand wanted it for a proposal and started trying to raise money to buy some ad time for his dream. He managed a pretty good $85,000, but nowhere near the $2,500,000 required. Luckily, once his plans started to become more well known, CBS let him buy some ad space in his now wife's favorite TV show. While watching Veronica Mars, Geraldine got the surprise of her life when Rand popped up on the TV and proposed. Luckily she isn't one of those who flicks to another channel when the ads are on.

5. Sky Diving

They were on the plane at about 20,000 feet when he proposed. It went so well that she jumped out of the plane. Maybe not the reaction he wanted. However, the fact that Mateo Martinez was about to take a sky dive with his girlfriend means that it wasn't so bad. When they landed she told him not to be offended by her jumping off the plane and that she would marry him. Luckily he still had the ring in his pocket and they could live h

appily ever after.

6. Tom Cruise

Sometimes people are too shy to do it themselves. If you are fearing reaction then getting someone else to do it is a good idea. Even better, get a celebrity to do it, you are guaranteed a “yes”. In 2004, Hollywood heart throb Tom Cruise helped cameraman Joao Martins to propose to then girlfriend Sonia on Portuguese TV.  Luckily she accepted his proposal however when Joao appeared from behind the sofa he happened to have lost the ring.  Oh well you can’t really say no to Tom Cruise can you?

7. Who’s Behind You?

Some people are a lot more subtle. David and Athena used to pose for photos as they travelled around the world. The spelled out the phrase “We always knew”, with each letter in another exotic location. For the last one though, David paid a couple of locals to stand behind them with a banner saying “Will you marry me?”. When they rushed to get the last picture of their collection developed you can imagine Athena's surprise and delight. Very clever David, now how are the rest of us supposed to compete?

8. 9,999 Red Roses

It used to be a single rose, then it was a dozen. Apparently, even a dozen roses isn’t enough anymore.  In China, loved up Xiao Fan decided to hire a team of tailors to design and create a dress for his then girlfriend that was made exclusively of beautiful red roses – 9,999 to be precise. When I buy roses they usually last a day or two, so I make that a pretty pricey dress that can in all probability only be worn once. The number 9 signifies forever in Chinese culture. His girlfriend wore the dress whilst they visited a theme park (which just happened to be where the pair first met).  Whilst at the theme part Fan proposed and received the tearful answer he wanted.

9. Cryptic Proposal

Another creative proposal was engineered by Bill Gottlieb. He knew that his wife was a crossword fanatic and that every Sunday she did the New York Times crossword. He managed to persuade the compiler for the crossword to create a proposal in one of the crosswords. Bill waited patiently as his wife did the crossword across the table over breakfast one Sunday. Luckily she got the answer right and Bill got the right answer too.

10. The Writing is on the Wall

If you are planning a life together, sometimes the writing is on the wall already, like destiny. Sometimes it isn't and you have to put it there yourself. That's what Jeff Gurwin did in 2011, when he had local graffiti artists create a Scrabble themed landscape on a wall in New York's East Village. When it was finished, he asked his wife to be, Caitlin, to take a walk with him, and he knelt and proposed to her when she saw it. Luckily no vandals had got to it before they took the walk. The message remained and their hearts were to remain together forever.
