10. The Entry

The athletes enter in the stadium along with their delegations. When they enter into the stadium they go in alphabetical order. Greece is the only one that does not go in ABC order because they go into it first. The host country then enters in the stadium last. It's always very exciting to watch the athletes enter the stadium. Most of the countries enter in with using short names and others might use either alternative or formal names. One example is the Republic of China entered and compromised their flag and name with using “Chinese Taipei” so they would not enter in at the same time with the People's Republic of China which might have caused conflict. In the reign of Muammar Gaddafi the Libyan Athletes would march under Libya instead of using Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.

9. The Declaration

In the opening of the Olympics the declaration is done by the Head of the State from the country that is hosting it. The games then proceed with the president of the Games Organizing Committee giving the address. Once that is completed the speech is then made by the President of the IOC. The Olympic Summer Games 2012 Declaration was spoken by Queen Elizabeth and she opened it with saying “I Declare Open The Games of London.”  Prince Philip accompanied her in the games.

8. Olympic Flag

After the speech is done by the IOC President the next thing that happens in the opening is that the Olympic flag enters into the stadium. When all of the countries have entered in the stadium and the speeches have been completed plus the Games have been officially decl

ared then the flag is brought in then raised on the flagpole of the stadium. When this is happening the Olympic Anthem starts to play. It is a moment that is very touching and moving.

7. Doves

The first lighting of the cauldron is done and once that is completed the release of the doves happens. This is very important because this is a symbol of peace for the games. Back in the year 1896 this was first done and then it was done in the year 1920. After the year 1920 it has continued to be part of the ritual of the opening ceremony. In the year 1988 at the Seoul Games they tried to release the doves first before the cauldron was done and because of it a lot of the doves actually died and burst into flames.

6. The Oath

There is one athlete that does the oath sworn and then there is the official that is from the actual host country and also does the oath sworn. The official does it out of respect of the Olympic rules. In the 2012 Olympics the athlete that was chosen to do the Olympic Oath sworn was the Taekwondo athlete Sarah Stevenson.

5. The Cauldron

When the oath is done then the flame entrance and the lighting of the Olympics cauldron takes place. The Olympic Summer Games 2012 decided that the young British athletes who are very promising would light up the cauldron. The torch arrived on the boat that was driven by the famous football star David Beckham.

The Olympic Flag is handed over to the Olympic host city which means that the Olympic games continuity. In the 2012 Summer Game Olympics the Mayor of Rio was handed the official Games flag right before the flame was extinguished in the Olympic Stadium.

3. Friendship

The athletes show support of the other athletes and they all gather in the stadium. This also shows friendship. In the closing ceremony the host country's flag is also raised and the performance is done of the national anthem. The “Parade of the Flags” is a tradition that is done as part of the closing ceremony. The last of the medals is done once all of the athletes have entered into the stadium.

2. Olympic Torch Extinguished

The cauldron lighting takes place 17 days before the Olympic flame gets extinguished. When this happens the games of the XXX Olympiad is closed.

1. IOC President

The closing of the Olympic games is officially done when the IOC President does the declaration. The IOC President of the Olympic Games 2012 President Jacques Rogge said on Sunday that he felt that the Olympics in London were both glorious and also happy.

10. George Michael

George Michael might have been the last person people thought they would see at the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony. The reason why was last year he battled with pneumonia and it was almost life threatening. Fans went wild when George Michael appeared on stage. He is known all over in the UK and around the world for his British pop. He performed to the song “Freedom” and he also performed to one of the new songs on his newer track.

9. The Giant Illuminated Octopus

I think that Fatboy Slim wanted to always be remembered and let people know that he was back. He made a wonderful return with the giant Illuminated Octopus. His performance was a surprise and he performed some of his greatest hits such as “The Rockafeller Skank” and “Right Here, Right Now”. The songs that he did worked out perfect and his fans know that he is ready to get back into action. He went thru some hard times and battled with alcoholism but it looks like he is now back and proved that at the Olympics.

8. Lolo Jones

Lolo Jones had a rough week in the Olympics. She finished in fourth place with just 12.58 seconds. She talked about the loss she had was devastating. She said that it was just only two days before she could compete in the Olympics and because of what happened they just ripped her out into shreds. In the middle of the closing ceremony she belted out “Wonderwall”.

7. One Direction  

One Direction is very popular and they had a wonderful performance at the Olympics Closing Ceremony. Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson also known as the band boy group One Direction did their hit single called “What Makes You Beautiful”. A lot of the fans went wild as they started to sing and decided to sing along with them.

The song “Always Look On The Bright Side of Life” was made famous because of “Monty Pyton's life Of Brian”.  Back in 2005 it was third on the top hit charts and a lot of people wanted the song played at their funeral. Back in 1989 when Chapman had passed away the Phyton members decided to sing the song together. It brought back a lot of memories when people heard it at the Olympics and it looked as if almost everyone was singing to it.

5.  The Flying Bicycle

A lot of people loved the performance that Emeli Sande did on top of the piled up newspapers but maybe one of the most remarkable performances was the flying bicycle. It was a wonderful performance and one that shocked a lot of people as the bicycle started to fly thru the air.

4. Batman and Robin

The Olympics highlighted Batman and Robin. This was a surprise moment for a lot of people and maybe even a shocking one. What a lot of people don't know is that Batman and Robin was first British heroes and just part of the actual English culture. It wasn't until later that the two heroes started becoming famous around the world and therefore, it just seemed very fitting to have Batman and Robin at the Olympics.

3. John Lennon

It only seemed right for them to add in John Lennon at the Olympics. He was shown on the huge screen as the choir that was from the home city of Liverpool was onstage singing. They sung the song “Imagine” and it was a huge success. It made many people from around the world miss John Lennon and remember his music.

Back in the year 1991 Freddie Mercury died but his memory lives on in the hearts of many. There was a wonderful hologram of Freddie Mercury at the Olympics. Jessie J did a wonderful job singing “We Will Rock You”.

1. Spice Girls

The Spice Girls made a wonderful entry into the Olympics with coming out of Taxis. The crowd went wild as they started to sing some of their old time hits. Back in 2001 everyone might remember the Spice Girls splitting up and it was a hard time for their fans. This was the first time they were reunited since the reunion tour back in 2008. Posh did not dance at first but then finally got into the groove of things, maybe showing the world that she is still Posh. The Spice Girls helped women with bringing confidence to them and many would agree that there is something about them that is empowering. It was wonderful seeing the Spice Girls at the 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony.

10. Cyclists Helmets

The cyclists wear helmets that are aerodynamic when they compete in the race for the triathlon plus in the race for the time trail. However, the one thing that is bad about these helmets is that they don't have any air vents included and so it could possibly get very hot when they are wearing them.

9. Volleyball Uniforms

The International Olympic Committee decided to change their rule at the beginning of the year. The rule was that beach volleyball players had to wear bikini uniforms and that it was mandatory for them to wear them. Most of the nations forbid their women to show a lot of skin. Now the women can wear decent shorts plus tops that would be either sleeveless or sleeved. They still have the option to wear bikini uniforms but it is no longer a required rule.

8.Synchronized Swimming 

Synchronized swimming is a sport that many people like to watch. However, you might find yourself sidetracked with the head and sequins of the ornaments. These are permitted when they are swimming. Swimmers use a tiny clip that is made of hard plastic and sometimes of wire that is with a very thin rubber coat and this helps so that the water won't enter in their nose when they are doing movements underwear.

7. Hair Gel Swimming

Hair gel is almost a must with Synchronized swimming. The gelatin that is applied is special because it's a paste that is thick and warm. It does harden and when they are in cold water it will remain firm and they need this in order for it to stay on correctly.

10. America Lost To the Soviets

You might have heard about the biggest rivalries in the history of the world between Americans and Soviets. So, 1972 gold medal contest between the two basketball teams was all but just a basketball match. Some even called it a match between democracy and communism, freedom vs tyranny and much more. In the start it looked like America had the upper hand, but suddenly Soviets mobilized to turn around the outcome of the match. Ultimately, the soviet team emerged successful after beating the uncontested and unbeatable American basketball team. The event had led to a number of political and public outbursts, but for what use.

9. The Black Power Protest

Olympics are indeed the biggest stage used for expressing one’s political grievances and plights. Something quite similar had happened in the 1968 olympics games. Two Black American sprinters had won the Gold and Bronze medals respectively in Mexico City were the spotlight figures of this controversy. Do not forget that it was the times of the black civil rights movement in the United States. So, seeing this open opportunity the two black sprinters raised their fists in support of the civil riots taking place in the country. 5. The 1984 Olympic Boycott

The head line of this boycott led by the Russians and aligned countries was that the holding the 1984 olympic games in the criminal U.S is a destruction of the olympic spirit and charter. Clearly, it was a response to the 1980 boycott. The countries which did not attend the olympics included Cuba, East Germany, Albania, Iran and Libya. The Olympic athletes work day and night tirelessly for gaining the edge over all other athletes. But there are also those who want to gain more than just an edge. The cases of doping are not something new, as a very similar case was reported in the 1960 Olympics. In these games, The cyclist Knud Jensen had suddenly lost consciousness in one of the events. The fall was so brutal that it broke his skull. He died soon after the accident. Later onwards, it was revealed that he had been using some high doses of performance enhancing amphetamines.

3. The Munich Massacre

Terrorism is not the growing issue of these days, as it had been there in the times of 1972 Olympic Games. The prime targets of the massacre were the Jewish Israeli officials who were a part of the 1972 West Germany Olympic Games. The attack was led by a Palestinian Liberation Organization who managed to infiltrate the rooms of the Israeli officials and athletes, managing to take nine of them as hostages. Their demands were the release of their fellow Palestinians. The German Authorities tried to lure them in a trap, but failed. In the end, all the 9 Israeli hostages had been murdered alongside 5 of the attackers.

2. The Atlanta Games Bombing

Billed and known to be the games of Unity and Peace, The Atlanta Games, Georgia were subject to yet another terrorist attack. The attack was carried out using a number of pipe bombs having sharp and needle like nails in it. The master mind behind the bombing is believed to be Eric Robert Rudolph. The bombing killed 2 people and injured nearly 111 of the spectators. Hoping to shut down the games, the bomber had made a lot of planning. Contrary to this expectation, the games continued delivering a big slap to this mad man.

1. The Lip Syncing China Girl

The opening of the Beijing Olympic Games was marvelous and enamoring. What’s more enthralling was the featured motherland song which was apparently sung by Lin Miaoke. Everyone was pleased to see this beautiful little girl sing which such great efficacy. In reality, the tender voice was of a 7 year old girl named Yang Peiyi. What’s more abhorring is the fact that the Chinese officials did not consider the personality of Yang suitable for the opening ceremony. How sad is that for the country who claims to be the most moral and goodwill of them all? How’s that for the worst summer olympic moment.

10. Protection Sprays

It is understandable as to why this is not allowed but yet at the same time, in the name of safety wouldn't people feel protected more if they could bring protection sprays? Maybe change this rule as to when protection spray can be used and when it cannot be used. Not allowing knives at the Olympics is one thing but a protection spray is something else. Agree, or disagree?

What happened to having some fun at the Olympics? When a game is over and your team won what would be wrong with pulling out a whistle and showing how excited you are about them winning? On second thought, I guess it's understandable why drums might not be allowed or air horns…but seriously, whistles? Maybe doing a whistle over and over might be too much but just doing it once or twice after a team wins should be fine.

8. Oversized Hats

Yes, you read that correctly. How can you determine when a hat is oversized? People might have their view blocked by the oversized hat and some others might find it to be distracting but if the person wants to look silly in front of millions of people isn't it up to them? It's one thing throwing someone out of the Olympics because of their behavior but could you imagine calling your parents and saying “Mom, dad they threw me out of the Olympics because my hat was oversized?”

7. Large Flags

You cannot have large flags but you also cannot have large poles and banners. They cannot be bigger than the size 1 meter x 2 meters. What's wrong with showing off pride from a country with a very big flag? Maybe they should allow this to see just how creative people can get with their flags.

6. Photographic Equipment

If you have ever wanted to hav

e some sort of excuse to build up media accreditation then this might just be your chance to do so because you cannot use any kind of photographic and equipment for broadcasting. However, you can use these things if you have accreditation in the media. Might be a great career to get involved in and more so if you enjoy sports. This rule does make it hard for fans to take videos and post them online at sites such as YouTube.

5. You Cannot Enter If You Have A Huge Cup Of Coffee With You

If you have a cup of coffee with you or either soup and any kind of syrup then you cannot enter into the Olympic if it is over 100ml in quantities so be sure that you measure your coffee and that you don't go over the limit with it or you might get a surprise when you try to enter in the Olympics.

4. Baby Food Might Need Verification

Baby food, sterilized water and baby milk is allowed but yet at the same time if you have baby food then you might need to taste it in order to confirm that it really is baby food. You bring it and you taste it. Yes, officer. It does taste like baby food to me. Would you like to have a bite of it? A possible reply from the officer “Sorry, that does not taste like baby food, your baby will have to do without it”. Isn't this rule putting the baby at risk for not having their food to eat?

3. Don't Bring Alcohol

You cannot bring alcohol inside. In some ways this makes sense but in other ways it does not. The reason why it does not make sense is because they allow you to buy alcohol inside. If alcohol is allowed on the inside why not just check a person’s age to make sure they are at the age limit instead of not allowing them to bring alcohol inside?

2. No Full Water Bottles Past The Gate

It's hot out and you have a full water bottle with you because of it but then you are told that you cannot take the water bottle with you inside. Why? The tents don't have a place to empty water bottles. Really? No bathrooms, sinks? Drinking water is inside for free.

1. Excessive Amounts of Food

How do they know when you've had too much food at the Olympics? Do they judge your size? Seriously, how can they determine when you have had excessive amounts of food and what if a person has a disorder and needs to eat a certain amount?

10. Tug of War

The Tug of War was a sport that was held in the Summer Olympics. It was done yearly at the Olympiad between the years 1900 to 1920. A club would enter the competition and because a club could enter it a lot of medals might be won from it. In the year 1904 the USA had a glorious year because the USA won three medals for Tug of War. The British team ruled in the year 1908 and took home most of the medals. Tug of war first had only six members and then in 1904 they had five and right before the sport was discontinued at the Olympics they had 8 members on the team.

9. Jeu de paume

Back in the year 1908 in the Summer Olympics was the sport called Jeu de paume. The Jeu de paume was the only sport event at that time to win medals. Longue paume was the version for it outdoors which demonstrated the Summer Olympics in the year 1900. It took two countries to compete against each other and at the Olympics Great Britain competed against the USA and USA took home the gold. When Jeu de paume first started players would only use their hands in order to hit the ball before the racket was evented for the sport.

8. Live Pigeon Shooting

It is hard to believe that this kind of event would be at the Olympics but back in the year 1900 they did have the sport live pigeon shooting. In the video clip above you can view a quick second of how they dressed and the gun that they used in order to do this shooting at 0:34 seconds in the video. The winner of this event was determined by whoever shot down the most pigeons and right before the event started the pigeons would be released.

In the year 1900 when horses would do the long jump. The jumps did not seem to be very impressive so this sport did not last for long in the Olympics. Many people were disappointed as to how this sport ended up working out because they would put in a lot of time trying to train their horse for this sport.

The year 1900 held many odd sports at the Olympics. Another sport that took place in the year 1900 was Basque pelota. It sometimes gets revived and was last revived in the year 1992. Two teams have to compete together in this sport. When this sport was played in the year 1900 the score some how got lost over the years and it is unknown as to who won in this event.

5. Rope Climb

In the years 1896, 1904, 1906, 1924 and in the year 1932 was when rope climbing happened. The first year that it happened just two men competed against each other. In order to do this sport the competitors would have to be shimmied up to the rope and then they would have to go up to the top as fast as they could. They got judged by both their speed plus the style and Nikolaos Andriakopoulos won the gold for rope climbing.

4. Roque

In the year 1904 was when Roque was held at the Olympics. The USA competed in this event. Roque can be played on either a clay court or it can be played on sand that is hard. It is an odd sport but yet at the same time it is very fun to watch.

3. Motor boating sports

Motor boating sports happened in the year 1908 and it was just featured one time at the Olympic events. In the year 1900 they did use motor boating sports as a demonstration sport. When the competition was taking place they were faced with some very bad weather and plus a gale started blowing when the competition was happening. 2. Club Swinging

This event was done in the year 1904 and in the year 1932. Competitors in this event would use ribbons, clubs, hoops, balls and rope. A competitor stands with the club in both hands. The clubs don't leave the hands like they do when you juggle them. The routine was important because that is how judges awarded the points. It was a very unique sport to watch and there are actually a lot of people who would love to see this sport back in the events.

1. Solo Synchronized Swimming

Weird, Odd or is Solo Synchronized Swimming just cool despite it not making a lot of sense? This event happened on the years 1984, 1988 and in the year 1992 when they tried to revise it back in the sports. The competitors in this event do music routines in the water. The part that is considered to be synchronized is when the movements that they did would be in line with the music.

Usain Bolt is known as one of the fastest runners of all times and is a four time Olympic gold medalist and a five time world medalist. He has the world record for the 100 and 200 metres. He went into the Olympics to win and he defended the Olympic 100m and scored the second fastest time throughtout history with 9.63 seconds. He is very happy with himself and says that he is now closer to becoming a legend or is he one already?

9. Max Whitlock: English gymnast

Max Whitlock was born on July 13th, 1993 and has worked very hard with becoming a English gymnast. He recently played in the 2012 Olympics in London and won silver. He scored the highest and ended up beating Louis Smith on the pommel horse. Back in May he helped out the team and they won Gold at the European Championships with the Montpelier.

Ben Ainslie was born on February 5th, 1977 and is a very popular English competitive sailor. He is the very first one to win the medals at at least five of the Olympic Games plus he won four gold medals and he is the only second one to do so and the other one to win four gold medals was Paul Elvstrom. Just at the age of eight was when he started to sail and then he started competing by the time he was ten years old.

Andy Murray was born on May 15th, 1987 and a known Scottish professional tennis player. He is ranked number 4 throughout the world and he is number 1 for the British. Murray won the Olympic Gold Medal in the men's singles plus won a silver medal with the mixed doubles. He performed amazing at the 2012 London Olympics.

6. Niccolo Campriani:  Shooting

Niccolo Campriani was born on November 6, 1987 and is known as an Italian sport shooter. He just recently won silver with the Men's 10 metre air rifle at the 2012 Summer Olympics and then he won gold at the Men's 50m Rifle 3 positions. He won a total of 12785. points.

5. Anthony Joshua: Boxing

The battle

between  Anthony Joshua and Erislandy Savon was very close. Everyone was watching until the very end to see who would end up winning.  Anthony Joshua was born on October 15th, 1989 from Finchley which is located in London, England. He is currently ranked as Number 3 for the 91kg+ in the World according to the AIBA World Rankings. He started boxing when he was 18 years old after he talked with his cousin and got inspired. He said he didn't go into sports for the money but that he wanted to win the medals.

4. Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott: Canoe Duo Slalom

Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott both did an amazing job with the canoe slalom duo. It is now considered to be a very historic day for the canoe slalom. They are the first one's from Britain to win gold medals with the slalom. Team mates Richard Hounslow and David Florence won the silver. When Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott won gold everyone was shocked including them. The crowd went wild and everyone celebrated with them.

3. Lin Dan: Badminton

Lin Dan was born on October 14th, 1983 in Longyan, Fujian. He is a badminton professional player that is from China. He is considered to be the greatest player of badminton of all times. When he was just 28 years old he had done the Super Grand Slam and won all of the nine big titles in the world of badminton. On top of his victories he can now add a gold medal in the mens singles because he defeated Lee chong Wei and got the gold which was no surprise for his fans.

2. Adrian Zielinski: Weightlifting

Adrian Zielinski was born on March 28th 1989 and is from Naklo nad Notecia and is the Polish Weightlifter. He won a gold medal in the men's 85kg category and had the total of 385 Kg. Adrian Zielinski said that he had fullfilled his dreams with winning the gold in this category. He said he thought he was going to get a metal but he did not think that he would be winning gold.

1. Michael Phelps: Swimming

Michael Phelps was born on June 30th, 1985 and has won 22 medals at the Olympics. He has the record for winning the most gold medals and that now includes winning the gold medal at the 2010 London Olympics. He won a total of four gold medals and two silver medals in the 2012 Olympics in London. He also holds the world record for the long course with the 100 metres butterfly, 400 metres individual medley, and the 200 metres butterfly. He now has 71 medals, 57 gold, 11 silver medals and three bronze medals.

Jenkins is a world champion British professional triathlete. She won the 2008 plus the 2011 ITU World Champion. On August 6, 2011 she won the London World Championship Series so that meant that she would have a spot in the London Olympics 2012. 8. Women's Olympic Cycling

Dani King, Laura Trott, plus Joanna Rowsell worked hard in the Olympics cycling this year as they clocked in three minutes and 14.051 seconds which now means that the world record has been set in the very first round. Britain won the gold, the USA won second place and Canada won bronze. All of these winners are young and just being under the age of 23 they have won medals.

5. Gabby Douglas: Gold USA Gymnastics Winner

Gabby Douglas was born on December 31, 1995 and is part of the US Women's Gymnastics team. She won the gold medals for both individual plus the all round team competitions. She is the first woman to be in the all around champion that is African American and also the very first one that is not Caucasian. She is also known as the “Flying Squirrel”. Douglas recently commented and said that it is the most amazing feeling to be known as the Olympic Champion.

4. Victoria Pendleton: British Track Cyclist

Pendleton represents England in the international competition plus represents Great Britain. She has won nine world titles and has a record in the six individual sprint competition. She won the gold medal for the Keirin.

A new record was added by Ranomi Kromowidjojo and clocked in 24.05 seconds to her winnings. Ranomi Kromowidjojo was born on August 20, 1990 and is from Sauwerd, Netherlands. She is a dutch swimmer of the Javanese Surinamese. She has potential for the butterfly and backstroke events but she is mainly known for freestyle. She won the gold medal for the 100m and for the 50 m with Freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics.

China winners Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei of China win the gold medal at the badminton women's doubles. Tian Qing was partnered with Pan Pan for the women's doubles and back in December they became world number 5 but now Tian is partner with Zhao Yunlei. It looks as if the switch paid off because of the gold medal that they won in the 2012 Olympics.

Tirunesh Dibaba was born on June 1, 1985 in Bekoji, Ethiopia, Arsi. She is known as the long distance track Ethiopian athlete and holds the world record for the 5000 metres world record. She won four of the world track titles plus five of the world country titles. She is known as the “Baby Faced Destroyer”. When the final bell happened on the 2012 London Olympics she took off like lightening and left the others far behind.

There seems to be a burst on networking sites as sport enthusiasts around the globe prepare to watch the epic Games unfold on screen. Like any other session of the Olympics, a great deal of talent and zeal can be expected, along with raw determination and hard work. apart from what we normally find as part of the package when we are keeping up with the Olympic Games it is worthy to note that there a quite a few things that can be defined as ‘firsts’ when it comes to tradition or what has happened before.

The only city to ever host the Games three times

London is now going to be hosting the Olympics for the third time. When they do this, they will have had the honor of hosting the games more than any other city ever has. London has previously hosted the games on occasion in 1948 and 1908 and has been known to be particularly good at it. It seems that the Olympic Committee can only expect the best this time around as well.

3D broadcast for the first time ever

Being able to watch the games in 3D is not something that has ever been possible before so this time around, viewers are especially excited. The 2008 Olympics used HD quality for broadcast but this year, viewers have the opportunity to watch in HD as well as 3D which is great news. A Panasonic spokesperson also said that this was the first Games to ever be broadcast in both these technologies and that that is an achievement indeed. The first television appearance of the Games can be dated back to 1936 when the Games were hosted by Berlin. 1948 and 1960 Olympics were also televised. Of course with today’s technology the experience of watching the Games is more visually powerful than ever before.

The first soccer team appearance since 1960

This is the first time since 1960 that England will have a soccer team in the lineup. This has not really happened earlier because England made a decision to not include inexperienced players. The team however will play this time around and if they win, it will have been for the first time for them in nearly a hundred years. Somewhere along this series of events, it can be speculated that Britain will figure out their recipe for success which worked great in the early 20^th century.

It’s not your standard feminine sport surely, but it is great for boxing enthusiasts and is definitely a first in the Games. Some violent behavior is to be expected as it would be in standard male boxing. There is middleweight, featherweight and lightweight in the lineup.

Paralympics this time around

This year we will see some very special additions to the lineup as disabled participants will be given equal opportunities according to new laws that have been put in place specifically for the event. Previously there were ‘Special Olympics’ in which World War 2 veterans who had disabling injuries could participate in certain sports. But now the dynamics have changed and the Olympic Games will include the disabled in their lineup.

The new stadium

The stadium in which the Olympics will take place is state of the art and has given much rise to speculation about how efficient it may or may not be. However it looks absolutely remarkable and can seat up to 80,000 people comfortably and has been built with 10,000 metric tons of pure steel. It is environmental friendly and conserves energy. It is the third largest stadium in the city. As in most great stadiums, there are plenty of huge screens and things to eat.

The provision of great public transport

The city has made provisions for easier public transport and has done so in an eco-friendly way so waste and pollution can be minimized. The transporter ‘Javelin’ has been created to make it easier for spectators to reach their destinations. It can transport 25,000 passengers at any given time.

Environment friendly set up

This is the first ever Games that has engineered itself around finding environmental friendly solutions and has made the entire plan around it. The carbon footprint of the city will be closely measured and other harmful factors will be considered. The transport system and the architecture of the stadium has all been built around making the Earth a greener place.

Since the first modern Games in 1896, 10 sports have completely disappeared from the Olympic schedule. These include the croquet, Jeu de Paume, tug-of-war, roque, pelota, cricket, polo, rackets, lacrosse and motor boating.

Also two sports that were previously listed as discontinued have made a surprising comeback. These are gold and rugby; they were voted back in as official sports for London 2012. It is also known that in the past the host country often included their own sports in the Olympic Games. Also some of the discontinued events have simply been updated to metric distances or modified into well-known events of today, especially in track and field and swimming. Some sports were also included as demonstration sports and these eventually became a part of the official program, while others just completely disappeared. Here is a description of some of top ten discontinued sports which were a part of the Olympic Games once.

Croquet at the Olympics

Croquet has been a part of the Olympic Games only once. This was included in the 1900 Olympics which took place in Paris. France won all events as mostly French competitors took part in this event. There were three women who competed against each other; however they did not win any medals. It is also known that these were some of the first women that took part in the Olympic Games. This tournament was also not a success among the spectators as only one fan watched the event. After that year this sport was never included in the Olympics.

Olympic Cricket

Next comes Cricket! This is currently a very popular sport in many parts of the world; however it has only made one appearance at the Olympic Games. It was also a part of the Olympic Games that took place in Paris in 1900. There was only a single twelve-a-side match. England was playing against the French team and the English team eventually won the match. The French team was also made up of mostly Englishmen, which included the British Embassy staff who secured a few days off from the office. The lack of competing nations and the one-sided affair did not bode well for further inclusion in the Olympic Games.

Other Olympic cricket trivia took place on the 29^th of June in 1948 at the London Olympic Games that began at the Wembley Stadium. Here the famed Australian 'Invincibles' cricket side was finishing off England in a test at nearby Lord's, winning by 409 runs.

Jue de paume

This is another one of the discontinued Olympic sports which literally means “game of the palm”. Jeu de Paume was played once as an official sport at Olympic level in 1908. The game is just like squash but instead of using a racket you have to use your hand to strike the ball. The competition was held at the Queen's Club in West Kensington, London. It is also called 'Real Tennis' or 'Court Tennis'. What we now call Lawn tennis or Tennis has also been derived from this older version of the game.

Basque pelota

This is known as pelota in Spanish, pilota in Basque and Catalan, or pelote in French. A Basque pelota is known to be one of the fastest sports in the world. This tournament was contested at only one Olympic Games, in 1900 in Paris. Only two teams competed,

therefore only one match was played, on 14 June. The winner was Spain over France! Later this game also made a comeback of sorts. This was being played as a demonstration sport in the 1924 (men), 1968 (men) and 1992 (men and women) games.

Polo

Polo has been on the Olympic program for almost five times. It was played at the 1900, 1908, 1920, 1924 and 1936 Olympic Games. In the final game that was played at the Olympic level in 1936, Argentina won gold in front of a crowd of 45,000 people.

Olympic Roque

A roque tournament took place only once at the Olympic Games. This was contested in the 1904 Olympics that took place in St. Louis. This is a hard-surface form of the game croquet. The USA won all three medals in this game, which was not really surprising as all the competitors were American’s!

Olympic Racquets or Rackets

Racquets is also known as Rackets. This was an early form of the game now known as racquetball. This has been a part of the Olympic program only once in 1908. The competition was dominated by Great Britain. They won all the three medals in both singles and doubles!

Tug-of-War at the Olympics

The tug of war event had been a part of the Olympic Games from 1900 to 1920. This was always contested as a part of the track & field athletics program. However, now it is considered as a spate sport. This may seem like an unusual Olympic sport to you, but this was in fact a part of the Ancient Olympics, first being held in in 500BC.

In the modern Olympics, the tug-of-war contest was between two teams of eight. One team had to pull the other six feet along in order to win the game. If after 5 minutes none of the teams had done this, the team which had pulled the most was declared the winner.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse had been on the official Olympic program twice, in 1904 and 1908. In 1904, two Canadian teams had challenged a local team from St. Louis, with the Shamrock Lacrosse Team of Winnipeg winning the gold medal. Players of the Canadian lacrosse team that won the bronze medal consisted of Mohawk Indians, and included players named Snake Eater, Rain In Face and Man Afraid Soap. In 1908 only two teams competed, of Canada and Great Britain. This sport also made a comeback as a demonstration sport at the Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1948.

Motorboating is also called Power-boating or Water Motor sports. This was an official sport only once at the Olympic Games, in 1908 and it was also a demonstration sport in 1900. In 1908 there were three categories – the eight-meter, 60-foot and open class. The event, strictly for men, involved racing five laps around a specific course. Their speeds however were not impressive by today's standards. The average speeds were around the 19mph mark. It was not exactly a great spectator sport either as the event took place in the Southampton, where virtually no one could see the action. Also due to bad weather, six out of the nine scheduled races were cancelled. After that year, this game was never included in the Olympics again.
